jump ship?

Why is it a natural thought to want to jump ship when the storm comes. Wouldn't it be wiser to stay in the ship and ride the storm out?

thinking...

maybe it's a ship packed full of dangerous items like machetes and saws and chains and barrals. much safer to jump ship then. it depends on your loyalty to the ship!

what if the ship is really an illusion? waht if the storm is an illusion? what if the storm is sent from God to counteract the illusion of the ship? what if the ship is God's providence, foreknowing that the storm, real or illusionary, would be experienced?

i have no words of insight.

I don't know much about ships. I wouldn't jump out of one if I knew a storm was coming. I'd be safer in the boat than in the water.

To totally change subjects. In ministry sometimes, it seems the temptation to leave a post because of difficulties is bound to surface. There are lots of factors that make such a move good or bad. The piece of advice I've heard and tried to digest is "don't resign on a monday."

Doug Field's "First two years in youth ministry" deals with frustration and perseverence in ministry quite effectively.

If the ship is named Titanic, don't even get on it.

Once Jesus wondered why the disciples didn't just rebuke the storm and stay in the ship.

Another time he asked a disciple to get out of the ship in the middle of the storm.

Faith and obedience is the common denominator.
